Tom Brown - Edwin Thompson

Tom is a Chartered Surveyor, Fellow of the Association of Agricultural Valuers, and a RICS Registered Valuer undertaking all aspect of rural work and estate management at the Carlisle office.

Whilst dealing with the full gamut of rural practice, Tom’s key skills are in relation to: Agricultural Landlord and Tenant disputes under both the Agricultural Holdings Act and Agricultural Tenancies Act; Valuation of rural property assets for specialist purposes including secured lending and taxation; Negotiation of access rights over land, particularly in relation to private parties, and utility companies; Management of rural estates and property, developing good Landlord and Tenant relationships whilst ensuring the successful economic performance of the assets;

Growing up with his grandfather a tenant farmer and his father a resident land agent, Tom has enjoyed the opportunity to see the coin from both sides. He is passionate about the countryside and the myriad of diverse issues and activities encompassed within. Tom relishes the opportunity to gain new perspective and further his understanding of the rural world and in so doing, assist clients with their own ambitions.

After a childhood in the countryside, and following a passion for sailing, Tom worked around the world, successfully passing his RYA Offshore Yachtmaster in 2006. This was followed by a degree in Architecture.

After a few years working and driven by a love of food, Tom trained as a butcher! He decided to further his interest and knowledge of the disciplines associated with rural business, identifying the opportunity to undertake an MSc in Rural Estate Management. In 2011 he studied at the Royal Agricultural College Cirencester where he successfully completed his MSc achieving the highest grade of distinction. Tom’s distinction capped off a year which also saw him become the winner of the John Clegg Forestry Prize and runner up in the Savills / Saffery Champness Tax Prize.

As a relatively new arrival to Cumbria, he is enjoying exploring the beautiful landscape with his wife Anna and their dog Pipit.
