Our client wanted to open a new modern Pharmacy in the village of Chirnside. There were no suitable shop premises available and so our client purchased a traditional ‘Cs’ Listed cottage with substantial grounds that had been derelict for many years. Located in the heart of the village near to the Doctors Surgery this was the ideal site.

The cottage was in need of complete renovation, from top to bottom, and as the building was Listed and of local importance, maintaining the external cottage façade was paramount to our design. A traditional palette of slate to the roof, lead dormers, rendered white walls and timber windows were chosen, with natural stone boundary walls retained where possible. Internally the main retail area leads to the consultation room, office, disabled WC and dispensary. Staff kitchen and rest area are located to the rear of the building. The large plot of land also allowed our client to create off-street parking facilities on site, including landscaped gardens, and both the internal and external facilities are fully accessible to disabled users.

Working against a strict NHS imposed timescale Edwin Thompson delivered the project ahead of time and on budget, with the work completed in late November 2009.
