The Scottish Upland Sheep Support Scheme application window is now open until the 30th November 2021. This scheme provides direct support to upland sheep producers to maintain sheep flocks on farms that are heavily reliant on poor quality Region 3 grazing land with payments based on the number of ewe hoggs retained over a set retention period.
Therefore, to be able to submit an application, at least 80% of your holdings BPS eligible land should be Region 3, with no more than 200 hectares of eligible land being Region 1. Further eligibility criteria are as follows:
- All eligible ewe hoggs must be retained on your holding (or on away winterings) from the 1st December 2021 to the 31st March 2022.
- Ewe hoggs must be less than 12 months old on the 1st December 2021.
- Ewe hoggs must be tagged with those tag numbers submitted as part of the application
Although payment rates have not been set for this year’s claim, last year upland farmers received £59.80 for each eligible ewe hogg, this provided a significant injection of cash to their businesses.
