John joined Edwin Thompson in the Summer of 2010 as an Associate Partner after working 10 years for a national practice in the north east. He became an Elected Professional Member of The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in 2003 and specialises in commercial land and property advice. He has a particular interest in creating and managing property investment opportunities for a wide range of private as well as institutional investors.
During his recent employment in the north east, John acted for a number of private and public sector clients. He was retained by Durham County Council, County Durham & Darlington Fire & Rescue, ONE North East and The Diocese of Hexham & Newcastle to advise on values and disposals of surplus assets. This included land, schools, depots, office buildings, care homes and churches.
A graduate of The University of Northumbria at Newcastle John studied Estate Management. He is a RICS Registered Valuer and currently acting for Lloyds TSB Banking Group, Svenska Handelsbanken, The Royal Bank of Scotland, United Utilities, Northern Rock, Sustrans, The Home Office, Gladman Developments, Edinburgh Woolen Mill, English Heritage, Cumbria Rural Enterprise Agency and The Salvation Army undertaking commercial valuations, disposals and providing strategic land and property advice.
Around raising a young family, John enjoys keeping fit playing a number of sports and is a keen follower of Newcastle United. He plays golf socially and is a member of a Lake District fly-fishing club. Committed to assisting Charities, John led a team to win an award for ‘Outstanding Innovation’ having raised funds for a local charity as part of an investment enterprise challenge.
John specialises in commercial property throughout the United Kingdom.
Whilst dealing with the asset management of a broad range of properties, John’s particular expertise lies in valuing, acquiring, selling, developing and investing in property projects. This includes retail, office, industrial and leisure properties together also with development land. He acts for a variety of clients with property portfolios throughout the UK, including private Trusts, family companies and individuals, as well as banks, financial institutions, and developers, based both here and abroad.
Investment is a particular specialism. John has years of experience acquiring investment properties, advising clients and managing their varied portfolios so as to ensure optimum performance in line with their risk aversion. Besides his experience in commercial property John also has considerable expertise in combination investment within LLP and other structures. His long term relationship with clients is testimony to his success on their behalf.
From a Cumbrian farming family John is also a partner within the farm business, based near Southwaite, between Carlisle and Penrith. He joined Edwin Thompson in 1974 becoming a member of the RICS shortly afterwards, and was elected a Fellow in 1988 when he also took over the management of the firms Carlisle Office.
John is an appointed valuer for The Agricultural Mortgage Corporation plc and an RICS Registered Valuer.
